Lilith, The Burney Relief, 1800 BC

This relief emphasizes Lilith’s ability to embrace opposing forces: she is serene and dignified, easily mistaken for an unassuming young woman, but for her talons, which display clearly her ability to defend herself and potential for violence and wildness. She is the night aspect of the divine feminine: sexuality, power, the desire to run with the wolves; but she is also wisdom (represented by her owls): the deep knowledge of our psyches and the ability to address old wounds. She unleashes the wild, but we see by her stance on a lion that she can tame it as well. She is formidable, wise, and fearless.
